Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Saint Louis University - Global Geodynamics Project (GGP) The GGP project began on 1 July 1997 and will end Phase I on 1 July 2003. Its purpose is to record the Earth's gravity field with high accuracy at a number of worldwide stations using superconducting gravimeters (SGs) with frequent monitoring of absolute gravity at each site to co-determine secular changes. See: Agreements, Stations, Goals, Publications, Links, Mailing List
Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) - Earth Rotation - Superconducting Gravimeter Temporal variations of the gravity force are measured by a gravimeter. For the superconducting gravimeter a superconducting hollow sphere is suspended by a magnetic field produced by currents in superconducting coils. Owing to the missing resistance the currents in the coils are nearly constant, therefore this gravimeter has a long-term stability never reached before. Forces acting by accelerations on this "probing body" are compensated by a feedback which regulates currents in an additional coil. These currents are monitored continuously and digitalized in a high sensitivity as well as high temporal resolution.
